The north bank in Rotterdam
The river made distance visible. Water, working boats and buildings on the opposite bank all moved at different speeds.
A strong west wind followed the quay. People leaned into it; gulls barely moved. Between the larger vessels, a small water taxi crossed quickly and disappeared behind a pier.
The walk ended near a bench facing the Nieuwe Maas. It was not sheltered, but the view was worth staying for: a city understood briefly as traffic on water.
