A slow morning in Delft

The first useful light arrived before the streets became busy. Canal water held a pale blue reflection, broken only by a passing bird.

A bakery door stood open and warm air reached the pavement. Farther along, someone swept yesterday's leaves from a narrow bridge. Church bells marked the hour, but the morning itself seemed unwilling to hurry.

I followed the water until shop signs replaced house fronts, then turned back by a different canal. By then the blue had gone from the shadows and the ordinary day had begun.
